You may be struggling to understand their emotions and reactions whilst also navigating your own thoughts, feelings and worries about what is happening.

A Psychoeducational Session for Loved-Ones offers a focused opportunity to gain a better understanding of parental preference for baby’s sex, why this can become emotionally significant for some and the impact that having, or not having, a baby of a particular sex can have on emotional wellbeing.

If you are looking to better understand parental gender disappointment and feel more confident in supporting your partner, family member or friend, you may find a Psychoeducational Session for Loved-Ones helpful. These sessions are designed to increase understanding, empathy and confidence in offering support.

Specialist Parental Gender Disappointment Services

Psychoeducational Sessions for Loved-Ones

A structured, one-off specialist session focused on understanding parental gender disappointment and supporting someone you care about through it

A Psychoeducational Session for Loved-Ones provides a focused opportunity to learn more about parental gender disappointment through specialised psychoeducation, discussion and reflection. Together, we will explore common themes and patterns associated with parental gender disappointment and help you consider how these may help make sense of what your loved-one is experiencing.

Drawing on my specialist knowledge of parental gender disappointment, my own and others’ research in this area and alongside ideas from evidence-based psychological approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) amongst others, we will explore common themes and patterns associated with a parental preference for baby’s sex, why this can become emotionally significant for some people and the impact on emotional wellbeing when reality does not align with what has been deeply hoped-for.

Alongside this understanding, we can also explore any questions or concerns you have in supporting your loved-one and consider practical ways of responding that feel compassionate and supportive. I can also offer practical suggestions and signposting to relevant resources and further support options.

Psychoeducational Sessions for Loved-Ones focus on supporting your own understanding of parental gender disappointment and helping you consider how you want to best support someone you care about. It is not intended to assess, formulate or provide therapy for the person you are supporting.

I’m so grateful for your content. Gender Disappointment and shame for feeling it is something that I’ve personally struggled with and I found very few resources out there on it when I was in the thick of it. Seeing information about it and others experiences really normalises it which is much needed because, as I’ve discovered, it’s so common but no-one talks about it.
